I just found dozens of ideal-fit prospects in under 30 minutes using LinkedIn's free search š
Want to do the same?
Here's Allison Ditmer's step-by-step strategy for quickly finding potential clients who actually match your ICP š
Let's dive in šš§µ
š Get Crystal Clear on Your Ideal Client Profile (ICP)
First things first:
We need to narrow our search from āanyone who hires writersā to the prospects who are likely to be:
The most profitable
The most enjoyable to work with
The best match for your skills and experience
Donāt have an Ideal Client Profile (ICP) yet?
To quickly come up with one, Allison recommends you look at all your current and former clients and ask:
⢠Who have you worked with thatās yielded the most profit? This isnāt about just looking at what they paid you, but also paying attention to how much time they required from you.
⢠Is there a pattern with industry, # of years in business, retainer vs. one-off projects? (That could give you an indication of the type of work to focus on in the future.)
⢠What are some of the shared pain points?
(Btw, if you need more help getting clear on your ideal client profile, Tyler has a course in MOFU that walks you through exactly how to identify your ICP ā and start landing work from them.)
Once youāve got that down, Allison lays out a three-step process for finding dozens of potential clients in minutes.
Starting withā¦
š Choose the Right Keywords to Find Leads
Once youāve got your ICP, itās time to break that down into the keywords youāre going to pop in the LinkedIn search bar to find the folks who might need your services but havenāt found you yet.
Allison suggests you think about their:
Industry
Job title
Location
For me, thatās:
Industry: HR tech companies (Iāve worked with five over the last few years)
Job title: CMO, Content Lead, or Head of Content
Location: London or the US
šÆ Use Boolean Search to Narrow Results
You probably use boolean searches all the time on Google (hello āsite:ā š). But I didnāt know they were a thing on LinkedIn.
Hereās Allison's quick guide on how to use āem in the LinkedIn search bar:
⢠āCEO AND Founderā ā Both words must appear somewhere on the personās profile page.
⢠āCEO OR Founderā ā Either word can appear on the personās profile page.
⢠āCEO NOT Assistantā ā Excludes certain terms. The word following ānotā canāt be present on the profile page.
For example, searching āHead of Content OR Content Leadā brings all these folks up for me.

Pretty handy, right?
But LinkedInās search filters are what's going to unearth your real ideal-fit clientsā¦
š¤ Apply LinkedIn Filters Like a Pro
This boolean search covers the job titles of most of my current and former clients:
"CMO" OR "Chief Marketing Officer" OR "Head of Content" OR "Content Lead"
But it doesnāt only bring up folks in my niche (HR tech).
Thatās where LinkedInās (pretty darn nifty) search filters come in.
Allison suggests filtering by āConnections ofā one of your best-fit clients. But I had the best luck with the āCurrent companiesā filter.
First, I headed to G2ās best HR software page. Then I found the list of the best Team Management Software (since thatās what Iāve written a lot for)

And I filtered my boolean search for folks who currently work at those companies.
Which brought up dozens of people to match with:

Thereās obviously hundreds of HR tech companies on G2 and Capterra. ChatGPT came up with a pretty comprehensive list, too (although I canāt confirm how many it hallucinated š« ):

With a bit of work, you can find hundreds of prospects this way š
LinkedInās āFollowers ofā filter brought up some great-fit prospects for me, too.

First, I Googled ābiggest HR influencers on LinkedInā (lol), since content folks who follow those people are pretty likely to work in HR tech.
Then I grabbed the AI Overviewās pick of LinkedInās foremost workplace culture expert:

And I filtered my boolean search to folks who follow Meghan, which brought up a bunch more relevant prospects:

Those two searches alone unearthed dozens of prospects to start reaching out to š
š Save and Organise Your Leads in a Simple System
Youāre obviously gonna need some kind of digital rolodex to keep track of all these prospects.
I use the Notion template from Tylerās Sales for Sane People course to keep track of mine.

But you could just as easily use a simple spreadsheet.
Allison recommends using four columnsā¦
Name
Title
LinkedIn Profile Page URL
Notes
Plus a Green / Yellow / Red Status column. Here's why:
This is a trick I picked up from a Project Manager who set up our weekly status sheets in my corporate 9-5 role.
⢠Green ā Indicates theyāre interested in hearing more about your services ā higher probability to convert into a client
⢠Yellow ā Actively having conversations
⢠Red ā Clearly indicated theyāre not interested at this time
And then if the name has no color, thatās my signal that I need to reach out, connect with them, and start the conversation.
